Letter from the President

Thanks to all our members for making the 2011 Annual Fall Conference one of the best attended in MAPA's history.  With over 110 parking professionals at our fall event and great attendance at our other programs throughout the year, this increased participation provides our board and me the validation to continue with "affordable, one-day programs, with time for learning and networking."  Just as important, our events are not just for upper management, but also for all employees within your organization. This allows your staff to see the "bigger picture", that parking is a thriving and growing business.  What better morale booster than to allow a deserving staff member to attend a MAPA event in 2012? (OK, more money would be nice...)

The MAPA board will be gathering in January for our yearly retreat to set the agenda for the New Year.  If there are any topics you are interested in hearing about in 2012, let us know.  I am hoping everyone has a safe and healthy New Year!  We look forward to seeing you all in 2012.

Larry J. Cohen, CAPP

MAPA President

MAPA's Fall Conference a Tremendous Success

By Chris Hankins, Colonial Parking, Inc (DE)

MAPA Held its annual Fall Conference on October 26 at the University of Baltimore where the theme for the event was "Parking in the Age of New Technology."Conf 2011

Over 100 attendees listened to informative presentations on how a statistical data-driven process was used to dramatically improve the operation of the parking meter program in Washington, D.C., the current and future state of electric vehicle charging for garages, condos, apartments and fleets, the use of social media in parking operations, how the University of Maryland moved to permit-less parking operations through the use of LPR, and finally, how sensors, networks and Apps are redefining the way we park.

Along with the timely and informative speaker sessions, conference goers had the opportunity to mingle with and speak to seventeen different exhibitors that represented products and services that included efficient lighting, EV charging, revenue control and access, facility maintenance, way finding, and much, much more.

Lastly, as always, MAPA events are a great place to network and the Fall Conference was no exception. There were attendees, speakers and exhibitors from twelve different states representing universities, governmental & municipal agencies, private operators, and vendors. The diversity of the participants was fantastic and made for a great place to find new opportunities regardless of what sector of the parking industry one was from.

MAPA continues to raise the bar for its conferences with powerful

programming and excellent participation among its members, so mark your calendar for the next Fall Conference on October 24, 2012 at the University of Baltimore!

Social Media

By William Boyle, Federal Parking, Inc

At the MAPA Fall Conference, Bill Boyle of Federal Parking gave a presentation on social media, smartphone technology and of ways to leverage new technology in the parking garage industry.

Attendees were presented with the results of experimentation conducted by Federal Parking in using Facebook, Twitter and QR reader app technology. The overview provided insight into using these new technologies for both internal management and in marketing to the public at large. Mr. Boyle also provided a sneak peek into the smartphone based parking garage inventory system being developed by his company in partnership with Accelerant Studios of Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, DC.
