Rolling In Smoothly: How ODU Transportation and Parking Helps Make Fall Move-In a Success

Fall move-in at Old Dominion University is one of the most exciting times of the year. The campus buzzes with energy as families unload cars packed with everything from dorm essentials to questionable snack choices, all stacked with expert-level Tetris skills. New Monarchs step into their next big chapter — and for our Transportation and Parking Services team, it’s one of the busiest (and most rewarding) times of the year.

The planning starts months in advance. Long before the first box hits the curb, we’re working closely with Housing & Residence Life, ODU Police, Facilities Management, and other campus partners to lay the groundwork. That means mapping out unloading zones, posting clear signage, and sending out detailed instructions so families know exactly where to go. With hundreds of vehicles arriving in waves, that early coordination is key to keeping things moving.

When move-in day arrives, our team is out in force — directing traffic, answering questions, and providing a calm, helpful presence amid the excitement. From issuing temporary parking passes, adjusting shuttle routes, and pausing certain enforcement so families can focus on what matters most, our team does it all. It’s a coordinated campus-wide effort, and we’re proud to be part of it.

Of course, no move-in is complete without a few heartfelt (and occasionally awkward) goodbyes. We’ve seen it all — from teary-eyed hugs to students practically pushing the car out of the unloading zone while yelling, “Thanks, love you, BYE!” as their parents roll away and wonder what just happened. It’s all part of the experience.

Just like our students, we learn something new every year. After the last box is moved and the final vehicle exits, we gather feedback, review what worked (and what didn’t), and fine-tune our process to make the next year even better.

Because at the end of the day, move-in isn’t just about parking logistics — it’s about creating a smooth, welcoming experience that sets the tone for everything to come. And we’re proud to play our part in helping students feel right at home from the moment they arrive.

Go Monarchs!
